In a deeply personal video shared on Instagram, UK-based barrister and digital creator @aprildivine_ (April) delivered what she calls the “realest” life lesson she’s ever posted: don’t expect to be liked when you’re trying to build an extraordinary life.
Speaking from experience as a young Black woman in law blazing her own trail in England and Wales, April warned that stepping out to break generational curses often means facing misunderstanding, resistance, and even envy, especially from those closest to you.
“Not many people liked how audacious I was,” April shared in the video. “Not many people supported it. Not many people thought it was possible. And even when they did know it was possible, they didn’t want me to know.”
Reflecting on her legal journey, April explained that isolation and rejection often accompany ambition, particularly for those who are first in their families to pursue greatness. She urged her audience not to interpret lack of support as a sign to quit, but rather as a common part of the path.
“A lot of people have not followed their dreams. They’ve settled… and here you come, trying to live your dreams. How dare you?” she said, adding that resentment, fear, and insecurity from others can become heavy emotional burdens.
Despite the challenges, April’s message was ultimately one of encouragement and resilience.
“The purpose of this video is not to discourage you,” she said. “It’s to give you a heads-up… When or if it happens to you, don’t be discouraged. Keep going.”
April continues to use her platform to share raw, motivational insights into her legal career and personal growth, connecting with audiences worldwide who are navigating similar journeys.
