Entrepreneur, author, and innovation leader Felecia Hatcher shared an empowering lesson she learned from her mentor, Myron, about shifting perspectives on success and generosity.
Known for her motivational speaking and impactful leadership in the tech and entrepreneurship world, Hatcher often blends personal anecdotes with valuable advice, and her latest post resonated with many of her followers.
“The pie is NOT big enough for everyone to get a slice, and if you don’t realize that, you will never be well fed from your genius,” Hatcher wrote in the caption of a video from a recent event, teasing the insightful message delivered in her video.
The Pie vs. The Garden
In the video, Hatcher explained how her mentor challenged her view of abundance.
“I see an infinite pie—almost happens to be sweet potato pie because that’s my favorite,” she said with a smile, but her mentor had a different perspective.
“Myron told me, ‘The pie is not big enough for everyone to get a slice,’” Hatcher shared. “He said, ‘You shouldn’t strive to eat your slice of the pie. Instead, you should strive to eat from the garden.’”
Hatcher explained the transformative analogy: eating from the pie ends with individual satisfaction, but eating from the garden produces seeds that can be planted to feed others.
“When you eat from the garden, your consumption leads to more opportunities for your family, your company, your community. Everyone gets to eat, and you plant more seeds for others to thrive,” she said.
A Lifelong Advocate for Planting Seeds
Hatcher’s message aligns with her life’s work. As the co-founder of The Center for Black Innovation, she has dedicated herself to creating opportunities for underrepresented communities in tech and entrepreneurship.
From launching innovation hubs to mentoring young entrepreneurs, Hatcher has been a champion of the “garden approach,” cultivating spaces where others can grow and succeed.
Before building her legacy in tech, Hatcher began her entrepreneurial journey selling gourmet popsicles through her company, Feverish Pops, which grew into a multimillion-dollar venture.
Her success as a business leader has made her a sought-after speaker and the author of books like Start Your Business on a Ramen Noodle Budget and Failing Forward: How to Learn, Grow, and Thrive from Setbacks.
Nurturing a Mindset of Abundance
Hatcher’s video not only struck a chord with budding entrepreneurs but also with anyone seeking to reframe their relationship with success and community impact.
By urging her audience to focus on planting seeds through their actions, she reinforced the importance of creating pathways for others to succeed.
Her advice, which blends practicality and inspiration, mirrors her own career philosophy.
“It’s not just about building a business,” Hatcher often says in her keynote speeches. “It’s about building a legacy and creating opportunities for others to grow.”
A Legacy of Empowerment
Hatcher’s reflection on the “garden versus pie” analogy adds another layer to her mission of empowering individuals to tap into their “genius.”
As a mother and a role model, she often speaks about balancing personal fulfillment with the responsibility of lifting others.
Hatcher reminds us that success is not finite. It’s about sharing, planting seeds, and ensuring that the fruits of one’s labor benefit others as well.
