Former U.S. Representative Mia Love, the first Black woman elected to Congress as a Republican, is facing a worsening prognosis in her battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer, according to her daughter, Abigale Love.
In a statement shared on Love’s X (formerly Twitter) account Saturday, Abigale Love said that the family and Love’s medical team are now prioritizing keeping her comfortable as her condition declines.
“Sadly, her cancer is no longer responding to treatment, and the cancer is progressing,” she wrote.
Love, 49, was diagnosed in 2022 with glioblastoma (GBM), one of the most aggressive and deadly forms of brain cancer. The disease has a low survival rate, with patients typically living between 12 and 24 months after diagnosis, according to the MD Anderson Cancer Center.
In May 2024, Love appeared on CNN’s “The Lead with Jake Tapper”, where she opened up about her diagnosis and ongoing clinical trial treatment at Duke University’s Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center. Despite being given a 10–15 month prognosis, she expressed hope, crediting both her faith and science for her perseverance.
“I was looking for a cure in my faith and in science,“ she said at the time. “Funny thing is, my patriarchal blessing said you will have a long and prosperous life, a rich and rewarding life, so long as you decide to remain in public service.”

Love served as the U.S. Representative for Utah’s 4th Congressional District from 2015 to 2019 before becoming a CNN political commentator and a guest on ABC’s “The View.”
She has previously shared messages of hope to others battling serious illnesses. In a 2024 Facebook post, Love reflected on her journey, saying:
“Whether you are facing a cancer diagnosis yourself or fighting a different battle, there is hope! For me, that hope comes from my faith and my family. Every day, I thank God for my life and a family who give that life beauty and meaning.”
On Saturday, Utah Governor Spencer Cox offered words of support, writing on social media:
“Mia Love has served Utah with integrity, and her strength and grace continue to inspire us. Our hearts are with Mia and her family during this difficult time. Utah stands with you.”
