A heated debate has erupted in Florida after state lawmakers advanced a proposal to spend millions of dollars renaming a public airport after U.S. president Donald Trump.
The move has been strongly criticized by Democratic State Rep. Ashley Gantt.
During a legislative session, Gantt sharply rebuked the proposal and Republican colleagues supporting it, arguing the plan prioritizes politics over public needs.
“No Voter Input,” Lawmaker Says
In remarks that quickly circulated online, Gantt questioned both the timing and the rationale behind the bill.
“None of this is actually going to benefit Floridians,” she said, adding that residents were not consulted about the proposal.
She also criticized what she described as a contradiction between the state’s policies and the decision to honor Trump with a major public asset.
“In the state of Florida, a convicted felon cannot even get a contractor’s license,” Gantt said. “He has 34 felony convictions and we’re naming an airport after him.”

Gantt also referenced recent legislative actions related to public safety and criminal justice, saying it was inconsistent for lawmakers to pass strict laws while simultaneously pursuing honorary recognition for controversial figures.
