A Georgia community has been left shattered and in search for answers after a 19-year-old woman was kidnapped from her job and killed by her ex-boyfriend, according to her mother.
Bridgette Jones says her daughter, Khaliyah Jones, had warned her to stay away from her ex, Cameron Hopkins, but the victim wanted to save him, her mother told WSB.
Bridgette said Cameron had been threatening Khaliyah for months. He would eventually go to her job at Wingstop in Lovejoy, an Atlanta suburb, and kidnap her. After police were tipped off, he led police on a chase and then gunned down the victim inside the vehicle outside Lovejoy High School.
According to the report, Khaliyah’s mother knew something bad would happen and repeatedly pleaded with her to leave him alone.
“I said, Kaliyah, loving him is going to kill you,” Bridgette said. “And he killed her,” adding that she implored her daughter to stay away from Cameron.
A year before the victim was killed, her mother said the suspect kidnapped her at gunpoint at a local Walmart.
“And here we are a year later, and my baby dead,” her mother said.
After Cameron shot Khaliyah, Bridgette says he called her to say he shot her daughter.
“He called me and he was screaming. He said, ‘Mrs. Jones! Mrs. Jones!’ And ‘Baby wake up. Baby wake up,’” Bridgette said. “And I said, ‘Cameron, you shot her.’”
Police say the suspect shot at officers after shooting the victim. Officers then sprayed pepper spray into the vehicle and he surrendered moments later.
In court Monday, Cameron requested a plea deal.
“If you could give possible pleas, give me that,” he told a judge.
Cameron is charged with murder, aggravated assault and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime.
