After he announced their split last week, Halle Bailey’s ex-boyfriend, DDG, has been addressing the ongoing buzz about their relationship, including why they had Baby Halo.

In a new interview, the rapper discussed the pressure he felt from public perception and how he believes it led them to take a significant step in their relationship—having a child.

“The Color Purple” star and DDG first sparked romance rumors in January 2022, then made things red-carpet official at the 2022 BET Awards that June.

Speaking to Essence in August 2022, Bailey revealed she knew DDG from his YouTube channel and shared that their relationship began with private messages on social media.

During a Sunday, October 6 episode of his No Ordinary Podcast, DDG disclosed that the doubts and negativity expressed by others strengthened his relationship with Halle Bailey.

“For a long time, people felt like I didn’t belong in the music industry. That’s what I feel like,” DDG admitted. “Especially me being with Halle. She’s a superstar. She’s the greatest ever.” DDG couldn’t help but gush about Halle’s success and talent, but he also acknowledged the scrutiny that came with dating such a high-profile figure.

Being with Halle, who is widely adored for her incredible singing voice and acting chops (especially in The Little Mermaid), often made people give him the side-eye. “They already had their princess. They already had this image of her, and then they look at me, and I don’t fit the image,” DDG explained.

“But it’s cool,” he added. “It’s the reason she (Halle Bailey) stayed with me. It’s the reason we had a child together. It’s the reason all of this happened.”

DDG also addressed his critics directly, implying that they might support Bailey over him without considering the consequences for their family, particularly the former couple’s son.

“I feel like people should keep that in their head when they talk about us. You’re talking about our family. You need to relax,” the podcaster said. “I feel like y’all don’t consider that at all. If I’m hurting, you know, that can be hurting my baby that you love so much.”

“I feel like a lot of people forget that,” he added.

On Thursday, October 3, DDG posted a statement on his Instagram Stories announcing the couple’s split.
