Issa Rae’s latest production, One of Them Days, starring Keke Palmer and SZA, has hit theaters with a bang, earning a stellar $15 million in its four-day opening weekend.

The buddy comedy, directed by Lawrence Lamont, not only secured second place at the box office, behind Disney’s Mufasa, but also outperformed Blumhouse’s Wolf Man.

A Buddy Comedy with Heart

One of Them Days follows the chaotic yet heartwarming story of two roommates, Alyssa (SZA) and Dreux (Palmer), who find themselves on a wild neighborhood adventure after Alyssa gives their rent money to her boyfriend—who selfishly keeps it. With eviction looming, the duo races against the clock to salvage their home and friendship.

The film, inspired by classics like Ice Cube’s Friday, has been lauded for its humor and heartfelt exploration of female friendship. Rae, who produced the film, and Lamont, who directed it, wanted to craft a relatable narrative that centers Black women in leading roles.

“You just know these people,” Rae said in an interview. “It was important to us to weave elements of who Keke and SZA are into their characters, making them authentic and whole.”

Critics and Audiences Rave

The film received glowing reviews, boasting a 96% critics’ score and a 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It also earned an A- CinemaScore and an 84% positive audience rating on PostTrak, with a 63% “definite recommend” score.

Women, in particular, have embraced the film, with 93% of women on PostTrak giving it high marks. Younger women under 25 were even more enthusiastic, awarding the film an impressive 97%.

“The chemistry between Keke and SZA is undeniable,” said Lamont. “From day one, Alyssa and Dreux felt like two women we all know—strong, funny, and unshakable in their bond. They argue, but at the end of the day, they uplift each other.”

A Labor of Love

For Rae and Lamont, bringing One of Them Days to life was deeply personal. The characters and storylines were inspired by real-life personalities and experiences, adding authenticity to the narrative.

“It means everything to see this kind of representation on the big screen,” Rae shared. “We wanted to create something fun, relatable, and filled with heart, and it’s so rewarding to see audiences connecting with it.”

Lamont echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of showcasing Black female friendships in a genre often dominated by male-centric stories.

A Strong Start for Black Women in Comedy

One of Them Days is proving to be a milestone for Black women in comedy, showcasing their dynamic range and magnetic presence on screen. The film’s success highlights the growing appetite for diverse stories that celebrate nuanced, relatable characters.

With its stellar opening weekend and glowing reception, One of Them Days is set to leave an indelible mark on the comedy genre.
