Karine Jean-Pierre shared in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE earlier this year that her daughter Soleil is a devoted enthusiast of the White House. “When she visits the White House, she could easily give you a tour,” the White House press secretary remarked at the Better Brothers Los Angeles’ 10th Truth Awards. “It’s quite amusing to hear her talk about it.”
Jean-Pierre, 49, mentioned that Soleil’s favorite spot in the historic building is likely the Oval Office. “She’s fascinated by it and has had the chance to visit,” Jean-Pierre noted. “So I would guess that, though I’d have to confirm with her.”
At the same event, Jean-Pierre was honored with the History Maker Award. Reflecting on the recognition, she expressed deep gratitude, saying, “I’m incredibly honored and overwhelmed by all the amazing people I’m being recognized alongside today. Sometimes I wonder, ‘What am I doing here? Why am I among them?’ But I understand the importance of representation. I know what we all mean to young girls and boys who look up to our community. So it’s truly an honor, and I’m in awe.”
Jean-Pierre also emphasized the significance of those who paved the way for her, acknowledging, “I always think, too, that I wouldn’t be here without the trailblazers who came before me. I’ve learned from their excellence and their experiences, and I stand on their shoulders.”
Regarding her personal life, Jean-Pierre and her former partner, broadcast journalist Suzanne Malveaux, 57, ended their decade-long relationship in 2023. In an interview with Vogue, Jean-Pierre described the challenges of single motherhood while co-parenting Soleil, calling it “challenging” yet fulfilling. “I’m a single mom who is co-parenting this amazing kid,” she affirmed.
