A wave of community support is growing for 6-year-old Kyra Rice, who is undergoing treatment after being diagnosed with low-grade brain cancer in 2025.
According to posts shared by the social media page Essence of Black Culture and fundraising details published on GoFundMe, the young girl has endured a difficult medical journey that has included brain surgery in September 2025 and chemotherapy treatments that began in December of the same year.
Her mother, Kashiya Rice, described the diagnosis as a life-changing moment for their family. Since then, Kyra has required ongoing hospital visits, specialist care, medications, and the use of a nasogastric feeding tube to maintain nutrition as eating has become challenging.

Ongoing Treatment and Financial Strain
The fundraiser, created by organizer Eileen Vogel on behalf of the family, states that Kyra’s medical journey has involved persistent pain, frequent hospital stays, and continuous monitoring that could extend for years.
Compounding the challenge, Kashiya Rice said she lost her job while caring for her daughter during a hospitalization earlier this year, intensifying financial pressure related to medical bills, travel for treatment, and basic household expenses.
The GoFundMe campaign has already raised nearly $14,000, with donations helping cover medical costs, transportation to appointments, necessary supplies, and housing expenses.
Calls for Support and Prayers

In her message to supporters, Kyra’s mother described her daughter as “intelligent, courageous, loving, and amazing,” noting that despite the hardships, the child continues to show remarkable resilience.
She appealed for continued support, stressing that donations, sharing the fundraiser, or offering prayers all help ease the burden as the family navigates treatment and recovery.
Advocates say stories like Kyra’s highlight the emotional and financial realities many families face when caring for children with serious illnesses.
