Lizzo is making waves in the political world after lending her support to Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris as the country inches closer to the 2024 presidential election.
The Grammy-winning singer took the stage at a get-out-the-vote rally in her hometown of Detroit, Michigan, and delivered an empowering message about the importance of voting and the need for a woman president.
Lizzo highlighted her love for the city and jabbed at former President Trump’s negative comments about the Michigan city.
Last Thursday, during a campaign event at the Detroit Economic Club, Trump compared the city to a “developing nation.””
“Our whole country will end up being like Detroit if she’s your president. You’re going to have a mess on your hands,” Trump said on October 10 about Harris.
“I’m so proud to be from this city,” Lizzo, a Detroit native, told the crowd.
“You know, they say if Kamala Harris wins, then the whole country will be like Detroit, okay? Proud like Detroit. Resilient like Detroit,” she continued. “We’re talking about the same Detroit that innovated the auto and music industries, so put some respect on Detroit’s name, okay!”
Lizzo also called Michigan the “swing state of all swing states, so every last vote here counts,” adding that “If you ask me if America is ready for its first woman president, I only have one thing to say: “It’s about damn time!” referencing her 2022 song.
The vice president also appeared with Lizzo on Saturday. Harris took the stage with her arms wide open, revealing under her blazer a “Detroit vs. Everybody” T-shirt given to her by the owner of the company that makes them during a previous visit to the city earlier in the week.
Michigan has been the epicenter of campaign activity in the last week. Harris spent three days in Michigan, visiting Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing, and Waterford Township. Her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, is scheduled to visit Saginaw on Sunday. Trump held a rally in Detroit on Friday night, and his running mate, Ohio U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance, is expected to hold a NewsNation town hall in metro Detroit on Thursday.
