Monica Says She Feels Unappreciated And Snubbed In The Music Industry Despite Her Successes

Singer Monica has shared that she feels she’s not getting the recognition she deserves in the music industry during a recent speaking appearance.

Monica, 42, expressed her thoughts on a live recording of the Lebron James’ produced talk series “The Shop: Uninterrupted”, sharing the stage with other panellists like musician Quavo and NBA STAR Lou Williams.

The full video was published on YouTube on Thursday, Oct. 12, 2023.

The songstress, known in private life as Monica Denise Arnold, started by speaking about the motivation behind her music journey, explaining that it has always been her passion to make good music.

The “Angel Of Mine” singer explained that no matter what our expectations may be, all of our lives have a purpose. For her, she once felt that because she had broken several records in her career that would be reflected in the amount of awards she received. However, the industry seems to have taught her otherwise.

“I was able to really enjoy my career because I didn’t have any expectations. I was not looking at stats, I was not worried about awards. I’m actually a person [who] for all the records I’ve broken, I really have never won any awards. I’m really the most forgotten if you think about it,” she shared.

The R&B singer now feels like “the underdog”:

“I can still go where I want, do what I want, live how I want. But when I say that, I am often forgotten, I was hosting the Soul Train Awards, was nominated for five, three of my songs in one category and still lost. But I went out to eat and kicked my regular sh*t after. I was not bothered because that’s not what I do it for…That is really my point when I say that oftentimes I’m forgotten in those spaces.”

Monica’s career is one of the more notable in the R&B music industry.

Last July, ShineMyCrown covered the story about the steamy video for her single “Letters”.

Throughout her career, the songstress, actress and rapper has had multiple songs go to #1 on the Billboard Top 100 Chart, including singles such as “Before You Walk Out of My Life,” “Don’t Take It Personal (Just One of Dem Days),” “The Boy Is Mine” (with Brandy), “So Gone,” and “Everything to Me.” Additionally, Monica has sold over 5 million records in the US alone throughout her career.

In totality, Monica has been nominated for awards nearly 40 times, though she’s taken home five wins.
