U.S. Rep. LaMonica McIver delivered an upbeat “State-of-the-District” address in Newark, touting millions in federal funding and legislative efforts, even as she faces ongoing federal charges stemming from a clash with immigration officers last spring.

Speaking at the Donald M. Payne Sr. School of Technology, NJ.com reports McIver outlined what she described as significant progress for New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District. The freshman Democrat said her office has secured $10.7 million in grants since winning a special election in September 2024 following the death of her predecessor, Donald Payne Jr.

Among the projects highlighted were $1 million for an afterschool STEM program in Newark, more than $1 million for infrastructure improvements in Orange and West Orange, and funding for public safety and community programs across the district.

Despite the positive tone, McIver acknowledged that her first term has been marked by personal and political challenges. She is currently facing federal charges after a May 9 confrontation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers outside a Newark detention facility, where she attempted to shield Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka from arrest. Prosecutors allege she impeded and assaulted a federal officer. A judge has declined to dismiss the case, setting up a possible trial.

“It has been extremely tough,” McIver said after the speech, noting she did not expect to face felony charges carrying the potential for prison time. Still, she emphasized her commitment to serving her constituents, saying the charges would not deter her from “doing what I’m supposed to be doing.”

McIver also used the address to criticize federal policy changes under President Donald Trump, particularly cuts to programs like SNAP and Medicaid that impact many residents in her largely urban district.

The event drew about 300 attendees, including local officials and community members. Leroy Jones praised McIver’s remarks as focused and effective, while Essex County Executive Joe DiVincenzo called her “a fighter.”

Supporters in attendance said McIver’s performance projected experience beyond her tenure. For now, as she balances legislative work with a looming legal battle, McIver signaled she intends to keep her focus on delivering for “the 10th.”
