Ray J’s mother, Sonja Norwood, is speaking out amid speculation surrounding her son’s health, firmly rejecting claims that the singer is exaggerating or faking his heart condition. As concerns continue to circulate online, Ms. Sonja made it clear that her son is dealing with a serious and life-threatening diagnosis: cardiomyopathy.

In a video shared Tuesday, Ms. Sonja addressed the rumors directly. She said it had “gotten out of hand” for people to suggest that Ray J’s health scare is a hoax or something he is not taking seriously. She thanked those who have offered genuine prayers and concern, saying that support has meant a great deal during this time.

Earlier this year, Ray J, whose real name is William Ray Norwood Jr., was hospitalized in Las Vegas after suffering from severe pneumonia and heart pains. In January, he provided a troubling update on social media, telling followers that he had a “black” heart and only months to live. During an Instagram livestream, he revealed that he “almost died” while hospitalized because his condition had become that serious. He also acknowledged that alcohol and drug abuse contributed to his current health issues.

According to Ms. Sonja, doctors initially treated her 45-year-old son for pneumonia and chest pain. After further testing prompted by severe discomfort, physicians diagnosed him with cardiomyopathy. She described the condition as life-threatening and explained that at the time of discovery, blood flow to his heart was only between 15 percent and 20 percent.

Cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart muscle that makes it harder for the heart to pump blood to the rest of the body. The condition can lead to heart failure and other serious complications.

Ms. Sonja said her son must now prioritize rest as he adjusts to the new limitations affecting both his career and personal life. She reiterated that his health struggles are not a hoax and that he is learning to manage a condition that requires significant lifestyle changes.

As Ray J continues his recovery, his family is asking for understanding and support while he navigates a diagnosis that has altered the course of his life.
