Rep. Maxine Waters hosted a rally in Los Angeles on Friday, backing Kamala Harris as she gains momentum in her White House run.
The event at the Proud Bird near LAX brought together elected officials, faith leaders, and community organizers, all rallying behind Harris ahead of the Democratic Convention.
Waters addressed the crowd, acknowledging the Democratic party’s struggles with President Biden but expressing her excitement and strong support for Harris’s candidacy.
“We want everybody to have an opportunity to be right at the start of what is going to be one of the best, fabulous, well-participated in campaigns that America has ever seen,” Waters told the crowd.
Harris is concluding her first full week as the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee following President Joe Biden’s decision to end his reelection campaign and endorse her against Republican nominee and former President Donald Trump.
On Friday, Harris received endorsements from former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama.
Others who have endorsed her since becoming the party’s nominee include Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and former President Bill Clinton alongside former First Lady Hillary Clinton.
Do we want to live in a country of freedom, compassion, and rule of law, or a country of chaos, fear, and hate?” Harris asked a crowd of supporters at a rally in Massachusetts. “The beauty of our democracy is that each one of us has the power to answer that question. And the power then, I say, is with the people. The power is with the people.”
She continued: “So, in 101 days, which is November 5th let us be clear-eyed: We have a fight ahead of us. We got a fight ahead of us. And we are the underdogs in this race. Okay? Level set. We’re the underdogs in this race. But this is a people-powered campaign, and we have momentum. The day after I announced my candidacy, we saw the best 24 hours of grassroots fundraising in presidential campaign history.”
