The fallout from LaTocha Scott’s viral “Residuals” freestyle continues, with Kandi Burruss now weighing in on the ongoing family drama and urging LaTocha to prioritize reconciliation with her sister, Tamika Scott.
LaTocha, one-fourth of the iconic ’90s R&B group, set the internet ablaze this week with her emotionally charged freestyle.
In a video posted on Instagram on February 25, she transformed the lyrics of Chris Brown’s popular song “Residuals,” offering fans a personal glimpse into her life after leaving Xscape, the group she established alongside her sister Tamika Scott, Kandi Burruss, and Tameka “Tiny” Harris.
Over a moody beat, she cryptically revealed her marriage is “donezo” with her now ex-husband, Rocky Bivens, after “30 years” because he allegedly had a baby with someone else. “Reading through them comments, saying he having a baby/ I don’t know who’s lyin’ and maybe I was blind,” she sings. She also mentioned that they have been apart for two years.
LaTocha dropped two Xscape references in the cover. “Took some time away. I had to sit and face it. Who Can I Run To? Seems like nobody lately,” LaTocha sang, referencing Xscape’s 1995 hit remake of The Jones Girls’ classic.
She then made the revelation, “Even in a marriage, ain’t nobody perfect, but we’ve been split two years, and my heart is hurting.”
Her rendition also highlighted the distance between her and her sister Tamika, who alleged that LaTocha and Rocky took money from the group. LoToucha conveyed that she felt the absence of her sister [Tamika]. It’s a crazy feeling/ But y’all know family s**t be needin’ time for healing.”
In an exclusive chat with Vibe, Kandi addressed LaTocha’s grievances head-on. “I think she said it best—she addressed the issues in her personal life, her family… and mentioned us a little bit,” Kandi stated, her tone equal parts diplomatic and don’t-start-none-won’t-be-none. “But honey, fix what’s happening at home first. Then we can address us.”
The challenge, which was initially launched by singer Tank on his “R&B Money Podcast” in honor of Chris Brown’s album “11:11,” has attracted vocal talents such as Shawn Stockman from Boyz II Men, Vedo, and Trevor Jackson, who have all showcased their vocal abilities. Even Jacob Lattimore’s heartfelt rendition raised questions about his breakup with singer Serayah.
However, LaTocha’s version stood out for its sincere authenticity.
