Shequeena McKenzie, aged 28, achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Black female judge in McComb, Mississippi.
As reported by Black News in 2021, McKenzie’s journey to this significant accomplishment remains a testament to her hard work and unwavering determination even now.
Growing up in McComb, Mississippi, McKenzie harbored a strong desire to become a lawyer and make a positive impact in her community.
She pursued her education, majoring in Political Science with a minor in Human Rights at the University of Southern Mississippi.
Her academic journey eventually led her to Jackson, where she attended the Mississippi College School of Law. Notably, she not only earned her law degree but also graduated Cum Laude.
Throughout her educational pursuits, McKenzie didn’t limit her efforts to the classroom alone. She also began practicing law part-time, demonstrating her commitment to applying her legal knowledge to real-world situations. Her motivation was clear: she wanted to be a catalyst for change and actively contribute to improving her community and the world at large.
McKenzie shared that her inspiration came from Vice President Kamala Harris, who herself made history by becoming the first female and first Black vice president of the United States.
In similar fashion, McKenzie aimed to inspire and offer hope to young women by breaking barriers and achieving unprecedented success.
Her message to aspiring individuals, especially young women, is one of empowerment and self-belief.
She emphasized that despite entering rooms where no one looks like you, it is essential not to let such circumstances undermine your abilities. McKenzie firmly believes that everyone belongs in those rooms and deserves to be there.
It’s a mindset that, once embraced, can empower individuals to pursue their goals and overcome any obstacles they may encounter.
