A 31-year-old mother of three was found gunned down in the Oak Cliff section of Dallas, Texas, police say.
According to the Dallas Police Department, officers responded to a call of a possible homicide incident, to which they found Melanye Canedy bleeding from a gunshot wound. She was lying on the ground when found and was later pronounced dead.
At Canedy’s funeral, the program printed moving messages from her children, including one heartfelt note from her firstborn child, Mileyah.
“Momma, I want you to know that I will look after my siblings and help them all I can,” she wrote.
An investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made.
“She made sure her kids didn’t go without,” a victim’s friend told Black Girl Tragic. “Whenever anyone asked for anything, she didn’t care if it was her last, she gave it. She loved hard. She was so goofy as well! Kept everyone laughing.”
According to the publication, Canedy was in the process of trying to leave her ex-boyfriend.
According to the Institute for Family Studies, some women choose to stay in abusive relationships because “being controlled and hurt is traumatizing, and this leads to confusion, doubts, and even self-blame. Perpetrators harass and accuse victims, which wears them down and causes despair and guilt,” adding that “if more people responded to victims’ stories of abuse with concern and compassion, instead of with criticism, more victims might speak up and find the support they need to live a life free of abuse.”
