Tragic! Florida Vice Mayor’s Congressional Bid Cut Short After She Was Found Dead

by Gee NY

A rising star in Florida Democratic politics, who was poised to officially enter a crowded congressional primary as soon as Thursday, has been found dead in her home.

Police have arrested her husband in connection with the case, which is being investigated as a domestic violence incident.

Nancy Metayer Bowen, the vice mayor and commissioner of Coral Springs, was discovered Wednesday morning after local police conducted a wellness check at her residence. Officers arrived to find the 48-year-old’s body inside the home.

Police have confirmed that Nancy’s husband, Stephen Bowen, is in custody. Authorities state there are no additional suspects, and the investigation is proceeding as a domestic violence-related death.

The timing of the tragedy has shocked local political circles. Florida Rep. Jared Moskowitz revealed that Nancy was on the verge of announcing her candidacy for the U.S. Congress. According to the Miami Herald, that announcement was scheduled for Thursday.

Citing sources, the Herald reports Nancy intended to run in the Democratic primary for the seat currently held by Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who was recently indicted for allegedly funneling millions of dollars in disaster relief funds to her own campaign.

Nancy Metayer Bowen had already made history in Coral Springs. Elected in 2020, she served as the first Black and Haitian American woman commissioner of the city. She was reelected in 2024 and was appointed to a second term as the city’s vice mayor just last November.

The investigation remains active. No further details about the cause of death have been released at this time.
