Itâs official! Stacey Kemp will face off against Gov. Brian Kemp after winning the Democratic gubernatorial primary in Georgia.
Abrams ran unopposed.
Kemp narrowly defeated Abrams in 2018. Kemp was secretary of state when they first faced each other. After the results, Abrams accused Kemp of abusing the election process and intentionally alienating Black voters.
âIâm running because I believe in one Georgia, whether itâs bringing together neighborhoods, bringing together counties or bringing together an entire state. Our responsibility is to see the needs of every Georgian,â Abrams said on Tuesday morning.
Abrams will have a huge uphill battle. After the state was flipped blue, the GOP is determined to flip the state back to Republican control.
Since 2018, Abrams has become one of the most prominent advocates for voting rights.
Kemp beat out former Senator David Perdue. Perdue went viral this week for racist remarks he made about Abrams.
âShe said that âGeorgia is the worst place in the country to live.â Hey, she ainât from here,â Perdue said. âLet her go back where she came from. She doesnât like it here. The only thing she wants is to be president of the United States. She doesnât care about the people in Georgia.â
He continued: âWhen she told Black farmers you donât need to be on the farm and she told Black workers in hospitality and all this you donât need to be ⊠she is demeaning her own race when it comes to that.â
Kemp has stayed award from making such inflammatory remarks. However, he paints Abrams as the end to the end of Georgia as we know itâŠand he doesnât believe it will be for the better.
âI want to be crystal clear with all of you here tonight: Our battle is far from over tonight,â Kemp told his supporters on Tuesday evening. âTonight, the fight for the soul of our state begins to make sure that Stacey Abrams is not going to be our governor or the next president.â
Abrams is not intimidated by Kempâs severe stance.
âI had an inelegant delivery of the statement that I was making, and that is that Brian Kemp is a failed governor and doesnât care about the people of Georgia,â she said. âLook at his record. Look at the results under his four years of leadership.â
