Yung Miami, one-half of the rap duo City Girls, has responded to backlash after receiving criticism for winning “Best Hip Hop Platform” at the 2022 BET Hip Hop Awards at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center in Atlanta last Friday. Her YouTube show Caresha Please tied with N.O.R.E and DJ EFN’s Drink Champs. Both are under the REVOLT conglomerate.
“Not y’all mad #Careshaplease won an award? Awwww :’(” she tweeted Wednesday.
Caresha Please made its official debut in June and has featured some of hip-hop’s biggest movers and shakers, including Diddy, Megan the Stallion and Kevin Gates. Contrastingly, Drink Champs, launched in 2016, has pulled in some of the music industry’s top celebrities as well, including Kanye West, 50 Cent and most recently, the legendary Patti Labelle.
On Wednesday’s airing of The Breakfast Club, co-host Charlamagne Tha God praised Yung Miami for winning the award but pressed Diddy, who made an appearance on the radio talk show, about her Friday win.
“I love Caresha, but it tied with Drink Champs,” he told the music mogul. “Diddy you know that’s some bullsh*t.”
In response, Diddy said that both winners were REVOLT shows, to which Charlamagne responded, “So you paid for that? Drink Champs should have won that hands down.”
Some Yung Miami’s fans chimed in on Twitter, saluting Yung Miami for the win.
“I love everything that’s happening right now for @YungMiami305.”
But others had questions. “Who paid for Caresha award? It should not have won over Verzuz. Smh I guess anything.”
“Did I read that right. Caresha please ain’t…….. never mind,” tweeted another.
Yung Miami, born Caresha Romeka Brownlee, began the rap group City Girls with JT (Jatavia Shakara Johnson) in 2018. They have since released two studio albums: Girl Code and City on Lock. Their single, Twerk, has been certified by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) Platinum-certified U.S. top 40 singles.
