Pretty Vee is facing a torrent of criticism after posting a video of herself performing Megan Thee Stallion’s hit “Mamushi” challenge.
Many Twitter users reacted angrily to the viral video, accusing the comedian of allegedly mocking Japanese, cultural insensitivity and disrespect.
The video, which has since gone viral, shows Pretty Vee wearing a short, form-fitting red dress with a traditional Chinese style. It features a high neckline and a gold floral pattern. The dress has a side slit, which adds to its revealing nature, and the material appears to be satin, adding to the dress’s sultry appearance. Many viewers took offense, especially since she was dressed in Chinese clothes, trying to mimic a Japanese-inspired song.
Pretty Vee finished the look with white calf-high white boots, styling her hair into two long pigtails.
While intended to be humorous, her dance moves have sparked widespread condemnation, with critics claiming that they mock and trivialize Japanese culture.
Critics argue that Pretty Vee’s exaggerated movements and lack of cultural context show a lack of understanding and respect for the culture she appears to be emulating.
Despite the outrage, some of Pretty Vee’s fans have defended her, arguing that the dance was meant to be humorous and not taken seriously.
However, this defense has done little to settle the debate, as most online comments have been negative.
It’s no secret that Megan Thee Stallion and Yuki Chiba’s “Mamushi” pays homage to her connection to Japanese culture, especially her love for anime and cosplay.
The hit single from her 2024 album has since gone viral after TikTok user @mona712_official posted a viral dance to the simple but catchy chorus. Megan has also performed the dance several times, including on stage and in the music video.
“Mamushi” has since gone viral as fans have been listening to the chorus — primarily spoken in Japanese — nonstop since the song’s release.
