Jovonne Cameron, a first-generation American and software engineer, transformed her career trajectory and entrepreneurial aspirations through the 2024 AFROTECH™ Conference in Houston, TX.

Cameron, whose journey into tech was initially discouraged by a high school guidance counselor, has now become a beacon of perseverance and innovation in the field.

From Educator to Software Engineer

Cameron’s professional path began in special education after earning a bachelor’s degree in business communication from Baruch College.

However, her passion for technology persisted, leading her to pivot during the COVID-19 pandemic. Within six months of making the leap, Cameron became a software engineer and later founded a consultancy helping small businesses integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into their operations.

Embracing AFROTECH™

In late 2024, Cameron sought new opportunities in her career and entrepreneurial endeavors. Encouraged by a friend who gifted her a corporate ticket, she attended AFROTECH™ with a strategic plan to maximize her experience.

“I went with the goal to get a job, but when I got there, I realized how much more I could gain,” Cameron shared. “The conference allowed me to blend my interests in content creation, consulting, and software engineering. It was unlike any other event I’ve attended.”

Cameron focused on expanding her network, upleveling her personal brand, and attending sessions on AI to enhance her technical and business projects.

The conference exceeded her expectations, resulting in two job interviews and securing a client for her consultancy.

Leveraging AI for Business and Career Growth

Cameron’s participation in AFROTECH™ solidified her belief in the importance of AI in both business and software engineering.

“I wanted to learn how AI could serve smaller businesses, but I also realized its potential for specialization in my career,” she explained. “Attending the conference opened doors to contract work and new ways to help businesses streamline their operations.”

Advice for Future AFROTECH™ Attendees

Cameron encourages aspiring attendees, especially students, to focus on personal branding and interpersonal skills.

“The job market in 2025 requires more than just cold applications,” she advised. “It’s about being a walking resume—showing your value and how you can make an impact. Conferences like AFROTECH™ provide the perfect platform to connect with companies and professionals.”

Cameron’s story illustrates opportunities abound for those who approach events like AFROTECH™ with a clear strategy and a willingness to seize the moment.
