PRIZM Founder Mikhaile Solomon to Black Creatives: ‘Put Your Energy Into People Who See Your Value’

During the 2024 Miami Art Week, the PRIZM Art Fair marked its 12th edition with an inspiring collaboration with REVOLT at Art Basel.

Centered around the theme “Architecture of Liberation,” the fair celebrated African and diasporic art through visual exhibits and thought-provoking panel discussions.

Spearheaded by PRIZM founder and director Mikhaile Solomon, this year’s event drew an unprecedented audience, with over 10,000 RSVPs, and set a new standard for showcasing Black art.

The PRIZM Art Fair featured 60 galleries, presenting powerful narratives about Black culture while offering a uniquely inclusive space. Solomon stressed the importance of creating a safe and sacred environment for Black attendees, describing the fair as “intentionally Black” — from its leadership to its team.

In an exclusive interview, Solomon shared her journey of founding PRIZM, her collaboration with REVOLT, and advice for Black creatives seeking brand partnerships.

Building PRIZM: A Platform for Black Art

Solomon, an architect by training, launched PRIZM at just 27 years old to address the lack of representation for Black artists in prestigious art events like Art Basel.

“I had a lot of friends in the creative space who were not being shown at Basel,” she told REVOLT. “Hearing their challenges inspired me to create a world-class platform for art from Africa and the diaspora.”

Solomon’s nontraditional background in the arts became an asset, offering fresh perspectives on curating exhibitions. She views PRIZM as an evolving thesis project, with each year’s fair improving in scope and impact.

Partnership with REVOLT: A Game-Changer

PRIZM’s collaboration with REVOLT marked a pivotal moment for the fair. Senior Vice President of Content and Branding at REVOLT, Andre Woolery, initiated the partnership after years of attending PRIZM. REVOLT provided financial and production support, helping PRIZM reach a younger, more diverse audience.

“The partnership with REVOLT allowed us to have our best fair yet,” Solomon remarked. “At the opening, the venue was packed, with a line wrapped around the corner. That had never happened before.”

Solomon credited the fair’s consistency over 11 years for attracting meaningful partnerships. She highlighted the importance of aligning with brands that recognize the value of Black art, rather than trying to convince others.

Investing in Black Art and Creatives

Solomon advocates for greater investment in Black art spaces, calling on brands to support organizations like PRIZM. Despite operating on a modest budget, PRIZM has successfully uplifted artists and created impactful events. “Imagine what could happen with the right investment,” she said.

Her advice for Black creatives seeking partnerships is clear: focus on those who already see the value in your work.

“You are the talent,” she noted. “Put your energy into people who recognize your worth.”

A Vision for the Future

Solomon envisions PRIZM as a lasting cultural institution that continues to celebrate the richness of African and diasporic art.

She hopes brands will embrace the opportunity to invest in platforms like PRIZM to connect with underrepresented communities while fostering a shared human experience.
