‘Dear Disney…I Want a Princess That Looks Like Us’: African Woman Makes Passionate Request in Viral Video

by Gee NY

Angella Summer Namubiru, the Ugandan artist and social activist who won the African Social Star of 2022 award at the E! People’s Choice Awards, is using her platform to make a heartfelt appeal.

She thinks it’s time for Disney to introduce an African princess whose story reflects the culture, beauty, and voices of the continent.

In a video shared on Instagram (@angelasummernamubiru), Namubiru addressed Disney directly, recalling how she grew up watching princess films yet never saw herself represented.

“I want to see a princess that looks like us. A princess that has our accents, our kinky, curly hair, our skin tone,” she said. “We deserve a fairy tale story too.”

Namubiru’s call resonated with her global followers, many of whom joined in tagging Disney to amplify her message. She explained that the request is not just about visibility but about giving African children and families stories that affirm their identities and inspire confidence.

“It takes us a long time to believe in ourselves because we compare ourselves with people that don’t look like us,” she added.

Beyond her artistry, Namubiru is the Director and Co-Founder of Blacare (@bla.care), a physical and virtual village that works with disadvantaged communities to tackle social and environmental challenges across Africa.

Her advocacy blends creativity with activism, underscoring her belief in storytelling as a tool for empowerment.

With her campaign, Namubiru joins a growing movement of voices urging media giants to expand representation.

As she put it: “Africa has the land, the hair, the dresses, the magic. What are you waiting for?”
