A Georgia attorney is urging parents to install dash cameras in vehicles driven by teenagers after a viral video showed how a 17-year-old’s dashcam captured a tense traffic stop involving police.
Stephanie R. Lindsey, a criminal defense lawyer who posts legal commentary on social media under the handle @attorneystephanie, shared a video on Instagram stressing the importance of dashcams after footage surfaced online showing a teenager’s encounter with law enforcement.
“You NEED to get your child a dashcam!” Lindsey wrote in the post, explaining that the device was critical in documenting what happened during the stop.

According to Lindsey, the 17-year-old driver had friends in the car when police pulled him over. The dashcam recorded the interaction, which has since circulated widely on social media and sparked discussion about police encounters with young drivers.
In the video commentary, Lindsey argued that without the recorded footage, the public might never have known the details of the exchange.
“But for the fact that that young man had that dash cam, we don’t know if we would have ever heard the story about what happened or saw what happened,” she said.
The attorney urged families with teenage drivers to consider dashcams as an additional safety measure, particularly as more young people begin driving independently.
“I keep telling you guys, if you have young men and girls that are driving—16, 17, 18—get you a dashcam for your vehicle,” Lindsey said in the video.
She also suggested insurance companies could consider including dashcams as part of coverage for young drivers, noting that parents often pay higher premiums when adding teenagers to their policies.
“I think the insurance company should automatically throw in a dashcam,” Lindsey said, adding that the devices are relatively inexpensive and can provide another perspective if disputes arise during interactions with law enforcement.
Dashcams have increasingly been used by drivers to document traffic incidents, accidents, and encounters with police, with legal experts noting that recorded evidence can play a significant role in investigations or court proceedings.
The specific circumstances surrounding the teen’s traffic stop, including the location and whether any charges were filed, were not immediately clear from the viral footage. However, Lindsey said the video highlights how recording devices can help clarify what occurs during roadside encounters.
Legal analysts say dashcam footage, when legally obtained, can serve as key evidence in civil or criminal proceedings and may also influence internal reviews of police conduct.
