‘Have Faith in God’: Teen Who Doctors Said Might Never Walk, Talk Again Receives Standing Ovation at Senior Prom

by Gee NY

When Destinee Hayes stepped out in her prom dress surrounded by family and friends, the room erupted into applause.

For many families, senior prom is a joyful milestone. But for Destinee’s loved ones, the moment carried a much deeper meaning. Just a few years ago, doctors warned them she might never walk, talk, or even recognize them again.

Now, the Michigan teenager is not only attending prom but preparing to graduate high school after surviving a devastating medical battle that nearly took her life.

According to a report from Local 4 News Detroit, Destinee was diagnosed in 2022 with Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children, also known as MIS-C, a rare and potentially life-threatening complication associated with COVID-19.

The illness led to a catastrophic stroke that changed everything for her family overnight.

Destinee underwent two brain surgeries, was placed on life support, and slipped into a coma as doctors fought to save her life.

“She was on a trach, she was on a ventilator,” a family member recalled emotionally. “And we were told, ‘Mom and dad, you need to make a decision.’”

The prognosis was heartbreaking. Doctors warned that if Destinee woke up, she likely would not be able to walk, talk, or remember her family.

But what happened next stunned everyone.

Against overwhelming odds, Destinee slowly began recovering. After spending six months in the hospital, she was finally able to return home.

Today, although she is legally blind, her family says she has refused to let adversity define her life.

Instead, she has embraced high school life with remarkable determination and positivity. Destinee is now a cheerleader, sings in her school choir, and is a member of the National Honor Society.

Despite all she has endured, she says she simply sees herself as a regular teenager.

“I’m just happy that they found the strength and the courage to take care of me,” Destinee said of her family. “Because I am still a normal teenage girl.”

Her story has become a source of inspiration for many families navigating serious illnesses and uncertain medical journeys.

Destinee’s family says faith, perseverance, and refusing to lose hope carried them through the darkest moments.

“Never give up in spite of what it looks like,” her mother said. “Do not give up. Have faith in God, have faith in your child, and just be a believer. Us doing all of those things is why she’s able to stand right here today.”

Now, as Destinee celebrates prom and prepares to receive her diploma, her family says every milestone feels like a miracle.

What doctors once believed might never happen has become reality, one courageous step at a time.
