It was just a week ago when Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta reality star Erica Mena was fired from her post for calling fellow castmate Spice a “monkey” during a heated exchange. Now, Spice is under controversy for calling a castmate another animal.
In the show’s latest episode, Spice is seen in a verbal altercation with Bambi, who was accused of taking sides after being seen hanging out with Erica after the “monkey” remark. But Bambi contends that she was not aware of the incident until a friend of hers mentioned it to her.
They would soon get into a tussle, leading Spice to call Bambi, a tall model, “fake” and a “giraffe.”
Shortly after the incident aired, scores of fans took to social media to call foul.
“Not her calling Bambi a giraffe after crying about being called a monkey… see this why we gotta stay out them ppl business,” one commenter wrote on Instagram.
Another wrote: “So she can call people animals but can’t be Called one???”
“So it’s fair to say they calling ppl names based on what they actually look like and not because they are black,” added a third person chimed in.
“I don’t think Erica Mena was using it as a racial slur. Maybe Spice look like a monkey to her,” another argued.
On Sunday, Mena was fired from the reality series following backlash over a clip that surfaced in which she called one of her castmates a “monkey.” The show made the announcement on their social media accounts Saturday.
“The Love & Hip Hop franchise has never shied away from hard conversations in our community. Working hand-in-hand with our partners, viewers will see the impact of Erica Mena’s remarks play out in the final three episodes of the season,” the message reads. “Effective immediately, she will not appear in the next season of Love & Hip Hop Atlanta.”
The Thursday before, Shine My Crown reported that the 35-year-old New York native trended online after MTV posted a clip of a recent episode, where she is seen amidst a controversial argument with fellow reality star Spice.
During a heated exchange between the two, Spice, a dancehall artist, is heard saying that Mena’s oldest son doesn’t like his own mother, causing Mena to flip a table, wishing her death and calling her a racial slur.
“That bit*h should’ve died!” Mena yelled referring to a health scare Spice endured last year.
“Your son hates you, bi**h!,” to which Mena replied, “You monkey, you f**king blue monkey!”
The exchange immediately set internet users ablaze, with many suggesting the term “monkey” is a term used to degrade Black people. Some also blamed Spice for bringing up Mena’s son during the argument, but by and large, it was Mena who was the target.
After the clip went viral, Spice took to Instagram to address the argument by posting a clip of Mena’s son. Mena is the mother of three children – two of whom she shares with Nicki Minaj’s ex-boyfriend Safaree.
“Kids are off limits right??????? But I guess it’s only when I ask cause where’s the same energy when Scrappy and Stevie J talked about it,” Spice wrote. “But now I’m a Monkey and should have died on the table? Ok, Erica.”
Mena has yet to address the controversy.
