Blake MacNeil: 16-Year-Old Track Star Soars On And Off The Field With Mission To Empower Black Girls

by Gee NY

At just 16 years old, Blake MacNeal is racing far ahead of her peers and not just on the track. The Newton North High School sophomore is earning accolades as both a standout track and field athlete and the visionary behind a youth nonprofit aimed at supporting Black girls in predominantly white environments.

MacNeil, who began running track in seventh grade inspired by her father and older sister, has since launched herself into elite competition levels. She currently ranks third in Massachusetts for long jump, second in triple jump, and among the top 15 in hurdles, making her one of the most versatile young athletes in the state.

“I do a lot of jumping because I really like flying,” MacNeal told CBS News, reflecting on the thrill that keeps her motivated. “Hurdles is my favorite sport. I just love the feeling of it and I love constantly trying and pushing myself.”

Despite her rising athletic fame, MacNeal remains humble and grounded. According to those close to her, she hasn’t let success slow her down, if anything, she continues to raise her standards.

“She’s achieved so much at such an early age,” her parent shared, “and she hasn’t become complacent.”

But MacNeal’s impact extends far beyond athletic achievement.

In a powerful act of leadership and service, she founded HerSpace, a nonprofit dedicated to creating safe, affirming environments for young Black girls navigating predominantly white schools and communities. The organization offers mentorship, support networks, and opportunities for self-expression and connection.

“It’s like a space for women to thrive,” MacNeal said. “When you have people you can relate to at a young age, it helps you feel welcome in areas. It helps you feel included. And I feel like feeling included is such an important thing.”

HerSpace has quickly become more than a club—it’s a movement. For MacNeal, creating a sense of belonging is just as important as winning races.

“Feeling like you have someone there for you is so important,” she said. “It’s such a valuable experience to have at a young age.”

CBS Boston recently honored MacNeal as BZ’s MVP of the Week, recognizing her dual achievements in athletics and advocacy.
