Crockett Urges Speaker Johnson to Recall House, Push War Powers Vote Amid U.S. Attack on Iran

U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett is calling on House leadership to urgently reconvene lawmakers in the nation’s capital to consider a War Powers Resolution, sharply criticizing President Donald Trump over recent military actions in Iran, which she described as unlawful.

In a social media post and accompanying interview clip, the Texas Democrat urged House Speaker Mike Johnson to bring members back to Washington immediately, arguing that Congress must assert its constitutional authority over war decisions.

“Mike Johnson needs to call the House back to D.C. immediately so that we can pass a War Powers Resolution,” Crockett said. “Donald Trump is completely out of control and must be reined in.”

Constitutional concerns

Speaking during a televised interview, Crockett stressed that the U.S. Constitution grants Congress — not the president — the sole authority to declare war. She accused the administration of acting outside legal boundaries and urged lawmakers from both parties to defend congressional powers.

“What we are clearly witnessing is lawlessness yet again from this administration,” she said, calling on colleagues to prioritize their oath to the Constitution over political loyalty.

Crockett pointed to a bipartisan war powers measure reportedly being developed by Rep. Ro Khanna and Rep. Thomas Massie, which she said should be brought to the House floor without delay.

Urgent call to act

The Texas lawmaker’s call comes after the United States and Israel launched joint attacks on Iran on Saturday, Feb. 28, which also killed Iranian leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Musavi Khomeini. Iran has also been retaliating with brutal firepower with attacks on Israel and the UAE. Crockett has warned that postponing action by the House of Representatives could have serious consequences, saying American service members could be placed at risk if Congress does not intervene.

“My question to Speaker Johnson is how many people are going to have to die because this president just decided that he was going to do whatever he wanted,” Crockett said.

She also criticized what she described as a pattern of military decisions made while Congress is not in session, limiting lawmakers’ ability to demand briefings or oversight.

Political and electoral backdrop

Crockett’s remarks also come as she faces an upcoming Texas Senate primary on March 3, though she stressed that her constitutional duties must take priority over campaign concerns.

“This is being said as someone who literally has an election on Tuesday,” she said. “I’ve got to make sure that I am doing what I swore to do as a sitting member of the House.”

The White House has not yet publicly responded to Crockett’s latest comments.
