Known as the Maths Queen in Ghana, Dr. Angela Tabiri, is a trailblazer in mathematics and quantum science, recently achieving global recognition as the first African to win The Big Internet Math Off competition.

This prestigious title, awarded by public vote, celebrates her ability to explain complex mathematical concepts in innovative ways.

A passionate researcher in quantum algebra at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in Ghana, Dr. Tabiri is on a mission to inspire the next generation of African women in STEM. Through her role as the academic manager of AIMS-Ghana’s Girls in Mathematical Sciences Programme, she mentors high school girls, breaking down barriers in a field often seen as a “boy’s subject.”

Dr. Tabiri’s journey began in Ashaiman, a bustling neighborhood near Accra, where she discovered her love for numbers despite initially aspiring to study business administration.

A scholarship to the University of Glasgow in 2015 deepened her passion, with the film Hidden Figures becoming a turning point in her career. Inspired by Katherine Johnson, the Black American mathematician who contributed to NASA’s space missions, Dr. Tabiri committed herself to making a difference in mathematics.

Through her nonprofit, FemAfricMaths, Dr. Tabiri provides free lessons to young students and amplifies the voices of female mathematicians globally. She also champions the potential of quantum science to drive technological advancements in Africa, from quantum computing to cyber-security innovations.

In 2025, Ghana will celebrate its role in spearheading the UN’s International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, marking 100 years since the discovery of modern quantum mechanics.

Dr. Tabiri plans to introduce more African students to quantum science through initiatives like a “quantum road show” and a “Quantum Hackathon,” empowering the continent’s youth to lead in a rapidly evolving world.

Dr. Tabiri’s achievements illuminate the beauty of mathematics and position her as a beacon of hope for African girls aspiring to excel in STEM fields.
