Jodie Turner-Smith and Joshua Jackson may have finalized their split, but behind closed doors, they’re locked in a fierce fight over parenting time, international travel, and how to raise their biracial child.
What started as an “amicable” divorce has turned into a high-stakes custody war over their 5-year-old daughter, Juno.
A “secret war” has reportedly erupted between the former power couple as they battle over their child’s schooling and travel, bringing to light some incredibly complex and personal considerations about biracial identity and parental roles.
Earlier this year, People confirmed that Jodie Turner-Smith initially filed for divorce after nearly four years of marriage, citing “irreconcilable differences.” At the time, insiders painted a picture of a mutual and respectful separation. However, the latest revelations indicate that agreeing on their daughter’s future has proven to be anything but simple. The actors, who share joint legal and physical custody of Juno, have not yet finalized a permanent child custody arrangement.
The tension became evident when Joshua Jackson opposed Jodie’s custody suggestions, particularly her intention to take Juno on extended vacations. To clarify, Jodie was allegedly planning to take Juno for two consecutive months, which violates their current custody arrangement. This involves a suggested five-week journey to London and another trip to Morocco, which Jackson contested, stressing the importance of having “frequent and meaningful contact” with his daughter.
What makes this custody battle particularly unique and layered is the context Jodie introduced. She cited research about the importance of a Black mother’s presence in the life of a biracial daughter. Joshua’s response to this deeply personal and important point was thoughtful and open. In a letter submitted as a court exhibit, he wrote, “I have read some articles about this, but I am always willing to educate myself further if you can send me some links or citations. I acknowledge my limitations as a white father. I hope you agree that the father/daughter relationship is also of huge importance”.
He’s stated that he doesn’t want to interfere in any way that would cause his daughter to experience trauma, and he’s willing to compromise with Jodie to ensure both parents play important roles in Juno’s life.
While their personal assets have been divided, Jackson will pay Turner-Smith $133,333 in two lump sums and $2,787 monthly in child support (with potential adjustments based on his income), the emotional and logistical intricacies of co-parenting a biracial child remain at the forefront.
