Former Vice President Kamala Harris sharply criticized the Virginia Supreme Court after it struck down a newly approved congressional map that Democrats hoped would reshape the state’s political landscape ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

In a post on the social platform X, Harris accused the court of undermining voters and aiding Republican efforts to maintain control of Congress.

“Today, the Virginia Supreme Court ignored the will of the people and overturned those democratically chosen maps,” Harris wrote. “This ruling gives a boost to Donald Trump’s effort to rig the 2026 elections and the Republicans’ long game to attack voting rights.”

The former Democratic presidential nominee added that while Democrats were “rightfully outraged,” they would continue fighting “to restore the power of the people.”

The closely divided Virginia Supreme Court ruled 4-3 that a redistricting referendum approved by voters last month failed to meet procedural requirements under state law. The decision invalidated a new congressional map that analysts believed could have helped Democrats gain as many as four additional seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.

As a result, Virginia’s current congressional map, which favors a narrow 6-5 Democratic majority delegation, will remain in place until the next scheduled redistricting cycle.

The ruling comes amid broader national battles over congressional maps and voting rights. The Trump administration has backed efforts in Republican-led states such as Texas and Florida to redraw congressional districts in ways designed to preserve the GOP’s control of the House.

President Donald Trump celebrated the Virginia ruling in a Truth Social post, calling it a “huge win” for Republicans and the country.

“The Virginia Supreme Court has just struck down the Democrats’ horrible gerrymander,” Trump wrote.

House Speaker Mike Johnson echoed that view, describing the court’s decision as “a victory for democracy” that ensures “fair representation in Congress.”

Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger, who supported the redistricting effort, expressed disappointment but urged voters to stay engaged ahead of November’s elections.

“I am disappointed by the Supreme Court of Virginia’s ruling,” Spanberger wrote on X, “but in those elections we — the voters — will have the final say.”
