Kandi Burruss-Tucker has been riding a wave in her favor lately and she has no intention of slowing down. Alongside her husband Todd Tucker, the former Xscape singer has just announced that they will be producers for a remake of the Broadway musical classic The Wiz.
The move is in partnership with producer Brian Moreland, who will work with the power couple to revive the musical to a modern-day soul fest filled with both seasoned and up-and-coming talent from across the world, according to Deadline. The tour, set to begin in Spring 2024, will begin with a limited engagement on Broadway before it goes on a national tour.
“We have always said we want to help open the doors of theatre to all people,” Burruss and Tucker said in a press release. “Theatre has the power to influence and inspire people to create change through art, which is what we all need now. Art can heal, and art can change you. It has changed us. So, come on and ease on down the road with us.”
The news comes after Burruss inches closer to EGOT status after the singer was nominated for an Emmy for her Broadway show The Piano Lesson. The nod came just one day after she was nominated for an Emmy in the Outstanding Historic/Cultural/Politics/Government/Societal Concerns Program category for her work on the TV show La Musica de La Familia.
On Instagram, the Xscape singer shared the good news stating that “It’s a project that I never even told anybody I was involved in,” she said of the Spanish production. “Look how God is working in my life. God don’t play about me.”
“Hopefully I will have another moment like this tomorrow as they announce the Tony nominations tomorrow,” she added.
When the Tony nominations were announced the Real Housewives of Atlanta star was among those honored alongside Tucker, who works alongside her in The Piano Lesson’s production. The show has been nominated in the Best Revival of a Play category.
“Wow, we are Tony Award-nominated producers!” Tucker posted on Instagram. “Kandi, you’re on your way to that EGOT. What a great week. Emmy nomination and a Tony nomination!”
EGOT status is when an artist wins an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award. In February, Viola Davis made history after attaining the status of EGOT.
The Woman King actress secured the extraordinary feat after winning the Grammy Award for best audio book after the release of her recent best-selling autobiography Finding Me.
In 2016, she won an Oscar for best supporting actress in Fences. In 2015, the Emmys recognized her as best lead actress in the TV series How to Get Away With Murder and in 2001 she won best featured actress in the play King Hedley II.
Should Burruss win both the Emmy and Tony, she would become the 18th EGOT winner, following the likes of Jennifer Hudson, John Legend and Rita Moreno.
