Kerry Washington is making headlines again, not for her acting prowess but for her role as an investor in Spill, a Black-owned social media platform.
Designed to offer a safer and more inclusive environment for marginalized communities, Spill provides a space for Black, Brown, and LGBTQIA+ users to engage in real-time conversations about culture and society.
Washington, known for her iconic portrayal of Olivia Pope in Scandal, shared her excitement about investing in the platform.
“In a digital world where marginalized groups, especially Black, Brown, and LGBTQIA folks, rarely feel prioritized, Spill stands out,” she told TechCrunch. “I’m proud to be part of this community as both a user and an investor.”
Founded in 2022 by former Twitter employees Alphonzo Terrell and DeVaris Brown, Spill has quickly gained traction with over 200,000 active users.
In 2023, the platform secured a $2.75 million seed extension, solidifying its position as a promising new voice in the digital space.
As an active participant on the platform, Washington regularly engages with users through “Tea Parties,” live video conversations that focus on pressing social issues such as voter registration and equity.
Terrell praised Washington’s hands-on involvement, noting:
“She’s incredibly accessible and knowledgeable… It really does represent the kind of environment we want to cultivate on Spill.”
Washington’s latest investment is in line with her commitment to advocating for Black communities and inclusivity. In the wake of the 2020 social unrest, she openly discussed the ongoing challenges Black Americans face.
“This is not a moment of revelation,” Washington told People, “but I’m grateful that the world is showing up for Black lives in a different way.”
With an estimated net worth of $50 million, Washington has made her mark not only as an actress but as a producer and investor.
She has used her platform to share knowledge about building wealth, partnering with Carta for its Equity 101 campaign to demystify the financial world for others.
Washington’s investment in Spill aligns with her broader mission of fostering equity, representation, and empowerment for underrepresented communities.
