Leticia Detrow’s remarkable journey is one of speed, strength, and breaking barriers.
Born in Uganda, adopted by an American family, and profoundly Deaf, Leticia has become a trailblazer both on and off the inline skating rink.
From winning national championships to claiming the title of Miss Maryland Teen, the 19-year-old’s story is an inspiring testament to resilience and determination.
Racing to Victory
Leticia’s love for speed skating began at a young age, culminating in her 2019 national gold medal win at just 14.
Known for her lightning-fast reflexes and unparalleled focus, she quickly rose through the ranks to become one of the top inline speed skaters in her age group.
Competing in high-stakes events such as the Comcast American Roller Speed Skating Championships in Colorado Springs, Leticia has demonstrated extraordinary poise and skill, using a flashlight signal from referees to start races instead of a starting gun.
“I think it’s easier because I’m the only Deaf one,” Leticia once signed to her mother, Kris, who frequently translates for her. “Sometimes at practice I didn’t know what to do, but now I just follow the person in front of me and copy them.”
The tight-knit roller skating community has embraced Leticia wholeheartedly, showcasing the inclusive spirit of the sport.
“It’s the best kept secret in sports,” said Meagan Renick, whose daughter competes for Team USA.
A Platform for Advocacy
Leticia’s achievements extend far beyond the rink. Recently crowned Miss Maryland Teen, she now uses her platform to advocate for the Deaf community and inspire others to pursue their dreams.
“Leticia loves anything fast—she wants to go fast, she wants to learn fast,” her mother Kris shared in a VOA interview. “She excels so much because she cares so deeply about it.”
Her determination shines in every endeavor. Whether gliding across a skating track or speaking out for inclusivity, Leticia remains a beacon of hope for those facing obstacles.
A Story of Resilience and Triumph
Leticia’s extraordinary journey has been captured in a heartwarming documentary that highlights her life, achievements, and impact.
From navigating early struggles to discovering her passion for speed skating, the film celebrates her unwavering spirit and the power of perseverance.
As Leticia’s story continues to unfold, one thing is clear: her legacy extends far beyond the gold medals and pageant crowns.
