In a vibrant celebration of creativity and mentorship, Saving Our Daughters, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering young girls of color, recently made history with its first-ever album recording.
The organization’s unique mission to pair “Student Cinderellas” with “Celebrity Godparents” in the entertainment industry fosters hope, builds confidence, and inspires dreams.
This groundbreaking recording session took place at Lounge Studios in New York City, featuring Broadway star Jasmine Forsberg, Disney Channel actors Emmy Liu Wang and Sway Bhatia, and musician Megan Piphus, the first Black female puppeteer on Sesame Street.
A Platform for Representation and Empowerment
Founded in 2014, Saving Our Daughters aims to dismantle barriers faced by young girls of color.
By pairing them with women of color who are thriving in the entertainment industry, the organization offers invaluable mentorship, representation, and support.
“I’m in a position to mentor young girls and show them what’s possible for women of color in entertainment,” said Megan Piphus, who led the session. “Seeing someone who looks like them succeed inspires them to break through any barriers in their minds.”
The girls, known as Student Cinderellas, recorded three uplifting songs from the new album, Cinderella Sweep, alongside their mentors. Forsberg, known for her captivating performances on Broadway, expressed her passion for giving back:
“When I was a little girl, I had incredible artistic mentors. Being part of this project allows me to pay it forward. Recording with the Student Cinderellas has been pure joy.”
Building Confidence Through Music
The event was not only a musical milestone but also a day of empowerment for the girls involved. One Student Cinderella shared:
“It makes me feel like I can do anything. This has given me such a big leap forward.”
The tracks, infused with messages of hope and resilience, reflect the broader mission of Saving Our Daughters: to create opportunities and inspire confidence in young girls who often face systemic challenges.
A Legacy of Hope
For Forsberg, Piphus, and the entire Saving Our Daughters team, this album represents more than just music—it’s a testament to the transformative power of mentorship and representation.
Forsberg added:
“Being on these tracks with the Cinderellas isn’t just exciting—it’s a reminder that when you lift others, you build a brighter future for all of us.”
The organization’s innovative approach to blending the arts and mentorship continues to resonate, proving that with the right support, young girls of color can overcome any obstacle and reach their fullest potential.
