The city of Memphis has officially bestowed upon its beloved daughter, Glorilla, the keys to the city. The rising rap star, known for her infectious energy and powerful lyrics, was honored for her significant contributions to the city’s music scene and culture.
GloRilla’s career trajectory has been nothing short of meteoric, a true testament to her talent, authenticity, and relentless work ethic, which have defined her journey from the streets of Memphis to the global stage.
The Martin Luther King Jr. College Preparatory High School graduate, who began pursuing music as a teen, was among the special guests for the Tennessee city’s annual 901 Day, named after the area code.
On Sunday (September 1), the Collective Music Group artist posted several photos of herself onstage downtown, where she received the Key to Memphis. In the caption, she wrote, “Memphis made me; Frayser raised me.” I got the key to my city, ahhhhhh. “Happy 901st day, Memphis!”
The honor arrives more than a year after Drake was gifted the Key to Memphis, and GloRilla had to defend him after receiving the honor.
When Drake received the key to Shelby County, aka Memphis, Tennessee, many people reacted angrily online. According to the main argument, the Canadian rapper’s receiving the award was ridiculous because the pop superstar isn’t even from the city.
GloRilla pointed out how the city honored some of its own, adding that it was important to note Drake’s historical ties to the city.
Note that Drake spent his summers as a child in Memphis. His father, Dennis Graham, is from Tennessee city. Drake has paid tribute to his “second home” in his music and videos throughout his career.
