Michelle Obama Laughs Off Divorce Rumors: ‘We’re Not Selfie People, We’re Solid’

by Gee NY

Michelle Obama is once again shutting down persistent rumors about her marriage to former President Barack Obama.

In a candid interview on the NPR podcast Wild Card, the former first lady addressed the speculation about a possible divorce, telling host Rachel Martin:

“The fact that people don’t see me going out on a date with my husband sparks rumors of the end of our marriage. It’s the apocalypse.”

The couple, who married in 1992 and share two daughters, Malia (26) and Sasha (24), have long been subjects of public interest. Yet, as Michelle explained, the lack of public displays of affection or appearances together has led some to jump to conclusions.

Divorce Rumors Reach a Boiling Point

While Michelle and Barack Obama have consistently enjoyed a strong relationship, gossip around their marriage has been circulating for years, but it reached new heights in recent months.

The rumors gained traction after Michelle was noticeably absent from significant events like former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral and the inauguration of President Donald Trump in January.

Tabloid stories, such as a headline from InTouch Weekly published last August, also fueled the speculation, with one report even alleging that actress Jennifer Aniston was trying to connect romantically with Barack Obama. Aniston quickly debunked these claims, denying any truth to the story.

Despite these outside whispers, Michelle is firm in her response, emphasizing that the public doesn’t always get the full picture of her life with Barack.

Privacy, Not Divorce

In the interview, Michelle opened up about how she and her husband prefer to keep their personal lives private, especially as they get older.

“We are 60. You just are not gonna know what we’re doing every minute of the day… we don’t take selfies,” she said. “I’m not here to Instagram every minute of our lives.”

For Michelle, privacy has always been an important boundary. She clarified that despite public speculation, any serious issues in their marriage would not be hidden.

“If I were having problems with my husband, everybody would know about it,” Michelle said in a previous interview on The Diary of a CEO podcast. “I’m not a martyr. I would be problem-solving in public. ‘Let me tell you what [Barack] did.’”

Despite the rumors, Michelle’s response paints a picture of a grounded and stable relationship with Barack Obama, one that thrives on mutual respect and communication rather than the need for constant public validation.

“Even in this phase in our lives, when Barack and I say something, right or wrong, it does get covered,” she reflected during the Wild Card interview, acknowledging the intense media scrutiny that has followed them throughout their public lives.

It’s clear that Michelle and Barack are choosing to live life on their terms, prioritizing their relationship and privacy over external pressures or public expectations.

As Michelle said, “We are not perfect, but we are good.”

The Power of Public Perception

Michelle’s candid remarks also reveal the complex dynamic between public perception and personal life. She discussed the unrealistic expectations placed on high-profile couples and how the public’s thirst for drama often leads to baseless speculation:

“The fact that we don’t go out to dinner all the time, or that you don’t see us doing these public displays of affection — that somehow means our marriage is over. But that’s not the case.”

Michelle and Barack have often been lauded for their strong and enduring partnership, and despite the gossip, they remain pillars of strength for each other, their family, and their shared vision for the future.
