According to FirstBlacks.Online, her breakthrough came in 1967 when she graced the cover of Times fashion magazine, catching the eye of renowned model agent Wilhelmina Cooper, who promptly signed her.
The pinnacle of Sims’ career came in 1968 when she achieved a historic milestone as the first Black model featured on the cover of a mainstream women’s magazine, Ladies’ Home Journal.
Sims’ presence on the global stage, walking in top designer fashion shows and starring in high-profile ads throughout the early 1970s, helped redefine beauty standards, expanding them beyond the narrow confines of the white-centric ideals of previous decades.
Vogue recognized her impact by naming Sims “Model of the Year” in 1968, solidifying her role in the growing “Black is Beautiful” movement, advocating for equality and empowerment.
Beyond her modeling career, Sims demonstrated her entrepreneurial spirit by founding a wig and beauty company that catered to the unique needs of Black women.
Retiring from modeling in 1973, she seamlessly transitioned into roles as an author and advocate, writing popular beauty and empowerment books and columns.
Despite her passing from cancer in 2009, Naomi Sims remains an iconic figure, celebrated by the New York Times as “the great ambassador for all black people,” leaving a legacy that transcends fashion and resonates in the realms of business and empowerment.
