Congresswoman Nikema Williams (D-GA) has announced she has secured over $12 million in community project funding for Georgia’s Fifth Congressional District. Additionally, she has requested an earmark award of $630,000 for public safety enhancements at Clark Atlanta University. This funding falls under Federal Nexus, provided for private land, aligning with Section 501 of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968. This section aims to prevent crime and ensure the safety of the public by improving law enforcement coordination and effectiveness.
The allocated funds will be utilized to renew Clark Atlanta University’s security camera system and enhance its video integration communication center and fusion platform. These improvements will also facilitate the replacement of emergency call boxes across the campus, bolstering safety for students and visitors within the Atlanta University Center Consortium.
“Through this award from Congresswoman Nikema Williams, Clark Atlanta University is poised to elevate our campus security with the highest-quality technology,” President George T. French Jr., Ph.D. said “The safety of our students is paramount, and we will continue our commitment to frequently evaluating and strengthening our safety measures and supporting the excellent work of our dedicated chief of police and campus police department.”
President George T. French Jr., Ph.D., conveyed appreciation for the grant, underscoring the university’s dedication to student safety. The upgraded video integration communication center will empower the university’s public safety personnel to oversee broader campus areas effectively. Furthermore, it will streamline collaboration with the Atlanta Police Department in real-time, bolstering situational awareness and overall security.
Further safety enhancements involve the transformation of emergency call boxes into blue light call boxes integrated with security cameras and enhanced lighting. Strategically positioned across the campus, these blue light call boxes will heighten safety, particularly in poorly lit areas with significant pedestrian activity.
“Our students are the lifeblood of this institution, so their safety is our top priority on this campus. We work diligently to enhance security features and safety protocols to protect our students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This award allows us to further bolster our efforts in increasing security measures through real-time camera.”
