The illustrious and historic African American Sorority Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. has a new member – and “Truth Is,” the international collegiate could not have picked better.
Fantasia Barrino-Taylor was inducted as an honorary member just days after the non-profit community service organization celebrated its 100-year anniversary. In a video posted on Instagram, both the organization and Barrio-Taylor announced that she had joined the sisterhood during their centennial celebration in Indiana.
“Night Pretty Poodles,” the caption reads.
“We are an organization with accolades described as ‘first’ and ‘only,’ Sigma Gamma Rho International President Rasheeda S. Liberty told EBONY in an interview. “Over the years, we have measured impact in areas of scholarship, social action, health and wellness, career advancement, and youth development. We live by the motto of “Greater Service, Greater Progress.”
Liberty continued: “In this century of service, we have progressed our communities by being the first and only in corporate leadership, medical innovation, athletic accomplishments and award-winning entertainers.”
Other honorary members include British songstress Marsha Ambrosius, Hollywood actress Wendy Raquel Robinson, California House of Representatives Congresswoman Barbara J. Lee and Brooklyn rapper MC Lyte.
Barrino-Taylor rose to stardom after her sultry Nina Simone-like voice stole the show during the third season of the hit reality television series American Idol in 2004. She would end up winning the singing competition and went on to release her debut single, I Believe, which debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Her debut album, Free Yourself, went certified Platinum by the RIAA and earned the star three Grammy nominations in 2006.
Liberty offered the following piece of advice for all new and current members of the organization.
“Stay active. Active is defined by your service impact and your financial commitment. In addition, there is always a way for you to share your talent and resources or network with your organization. Find the best intersection to ensure your long-term connection.”
Congratulations, Fantasia!
