As former Vice President Kamala Harris weighs a run for California governor, frustration is boiling over among fellow Democrats already in the 2026 race. Critics say her indecision is stalling momentum at a critical time for the state.

“California is not a steppingstone to higher office,” said former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who launched his campaign last July. “The challenges facing California are too great for us to wait for a candidate who wants to come in late in the game.”

Villaraigosa and others have pointed to Harris’ short-lived 2024 presidential campaign, which collapsed after President Biden bowed out, forcing a rushed and ultimately unsuccessful effort. “This will not be a coronation,” Villaraigosa added.

Other declared Democrats, including former Rep. Katie Porter and ex-HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra, echoed the urgency. “No one should be waiting to lead,” said Porter. Becerra warned, “This is not a time to sit on the sidelines.”

Despite the criticism, Harris would be a formidable contender if she enters the race. A source close to her said she’s expected to decide by summer’s end. “No one can question her commitment to public service,” the source said, noting her record as district attorney, attorney general, and U.S. senator.

Harris’ national profile, fundraising prowess, and past electoral success could quickly shift the race. “Her looming presence has a chilling effect on everyone else’s fundraising ability,” said Democratic strategist Darry Sragow.

But some donors are growing impatient. “There’s mounting frustration,” said Democratic fundraiser Tracy Austin, pointing to major spending during the 2024 campaign.

Fundraising totals so far show Villaraigosa leading with $3.2 million. Porter has raised $133,400, and GOP hopeful Chad Bianco reported over $215,000.

Republicans are seizing the moment. “Kamala Harris is positioning herself to run for Governor,” Bianco wrote in a recent fundraising appeal. At the state GOP convention, outgoing chairwoman Jessica Millan Patterson added, “I would love to see her on the ballot.”

Harris has remained largely out of the spotlight since the 2024 election, making occasional appearances, including at wildfire sites and community events.
