Teyana Taylor and Iman Shumpert’s split is a powerful blow to the Black family institution.
Reports say that Teyana Taylor secretly filed for divorce from estranged husband, Iman Shumpert, in January this year.
The multitalented music video director stated in the legal documents that her ex was “oppressing her and displaying extreme narcissistic behavior throughout the majority of their marriage.”
Teyana disclosed she fought to keep their family together despite Iman “being extremely emotionally and mentally abusive towards her.”
According to the model, she first attempted the process in 2021. After a short contemplation, she reconciled with her husband, but that was short-lived as he continued to “remain in an insecure state as his NBA career continued to wind down.
Teyana says in 2022, she found herself being manipulated and controlled by Iman and filed for divorce. Once again, she boycotted the idea when she asked her legal team to withdraw the filing one day later.
In the legal docs filed in Georgia, Teyana says she turned down recording opportunities and acting gigs “to intentionally dim her light for her husband to try to have a harmonious and peaceful marriage.”
She also added that Imam asked her not to work but complained about her not making any money when she stopped working after giving birth to one of their kids.
The model pointed out that her estranged husband has been involved in multiple cheating scandals and even added another one after he pleaded for them to work on their marriage.
Teyana also cited several DUI arrests. She claimed he once crashed her Rolls Royce and fled the scene to avoid arrest.
She detailed this embarrassing and humiliating incident became frequent, and he became “extremely emotionally and mentally abusive towards her” as his NBA career wound down.
Teyana claims Iman started sending her condescending and manipulative text messages and would pick fights with her for no reason.
In September, the singer announced their separation but denied rumors of infidelity.
“In all fairness, Iman and I are separated and have been for a while. To be 1000% clear, ‘infidelity’ ain’t one of the reasons for our departure. We are still the best of friends, great business partners, and are one hell of a team when co-parenting our 2 beautiful children,” she wrote on Instagram.
Now, she says, she was just being gracious towards him.
Teyana says she finally pulled the trigger in January, 8 months before their separation announcement because she was “unable to handle the emotional rollercoaster.”
