The Potential Candidates Who Could Replace New Orleans Mayor Latoya Cantrell in Upcoming Election

by Xara Aziz

New Orleans will have a new mayor next year as the race to succeed Mayor LaToya Cantrell gains momentum. Cantrell, who is term-limited, will leave office in January 2026. Axios compiled a brief overview of the candidates who have declared their intentions, those who have opted out, and those still considering their options.

Running

Helena Moreno, a current councilmember, announced her candidacy for mayor in December, stating that the city needs a new direction under fresh leadership. Learn more about her platform and vision.

Ricky Twiggs, a licensed counselor and independent candidate, entered the race last summer as a long-shot contender. Explore his background and campaign goals.

Maybe

Councilmember Oliver Thomas stated he plans to make a decision about running for mayor around Mardi Gras. Last summer, he launched an initiative called “PROJECT2025NOLA,” which he clarified has no connection to the conservative Project 2025.

Arthur Hunter, a lawyer, former Orleans Parish Criminal District Court judge, and former NOPD officer, told Axios in December that he is “strongly considering” entering the mayoral race.

Not running

State Sen. Royce Duplessis announced in a January 13 letter to supporters that he will not run for mayor this year, citing a lack of sufficient funds to mount a campaign.

Belden “Noonie Man” Batiste, who led efforts to recall Mayor Cantrell, initially planned to run for mayor but now tells Axios he is shifting his focus to a council seat.

New Orleans has been a Democratic stronghold for decades. While Republicans have entered mayoral races in recent years, they have not found success. In a statement last fall, Adrian L. Bruneau, chairman of the Orleans Parish Republican Executive Committee, criticized Democrats for stalling the city’s growth but did not indicate whether the GOP would field a candidate.

Aside from Ricky Twiggs, the candidates mentioned so far are Democrats. However, it’s still early, and more contenders are likely to join the race.

The qualifying period begins in July, with the primary scheduled for October and the general election set for November.
