Toni Braxton just turned her son’s Howard University graduation into a fashion moment, but not everyone’s here for it.

But instead of solely focusing on Diezel Braxton-Lewis’s big moment, the internet had its eyes glued to Toni’s outfit choice. Let’s just say it caused a bit of a stir, with some fans wondering if she mistook the graduation for a concert!
The R&B legend, 56, showed up to Diezel’s commencement in a jaw-dropping sheer ensemble that had fans side-eyeing her hard on what should’ve been her son’s big day.
The seven-time Grammy winner showed up to the 157th commencement, looking every bit the superstar in an all-black ensemble. Picture this: a blazer, a bodysuit (sans pants!), a sheer black lace skirt, and a dramatic wide-brimmed hat complete with a veil. Now, Toni has never been one to shy away from a little risqué fashion, but some felt this particular look wasn’t exactly graduation-appropriate.
While Diezel and Toni shared heartwarming moments from the day on Instagram, the comments section quickly became a battleground of fashion opinions. One person bluntly asked, “Why did she wear that?” Another chimed in, “You would wear sheer with your a– out at a special moment like that? As a parent? Toni is beautiful. We all know that I’m just saying it’s not appropriate for a child’s graduation.” Someone even quipped, “I wish my mama would,” clearly not a fan of the daring look for the occasion.
However, Toni seemed unfazed by the online chatter, clearly basking in her son’s achievement. In her own Instagram post, she shared an emotional video of Diezel tearing up as he prepared to walk across the stage. Her caption was pure pride: “I got the best Mother’s Day gift! My son is officially a HOWARD UNIVERSITY GRADUATE!! I’m so proud of you, @diezel.braxton, and can’t wait to see all the amazing things you’ll accomplish! YOU DID THAT! Proud #BoyMom.”
Interestingly, this wasn’t Toni’s first rodeo as a proud mom at a graduation. Back in March, when she and her ex-husband Keri Lewis’s eldest son, Denim, graduated from the Fashion Institute Of Merchandising And Design, her outfit was noticeably different. In photos from that event, Toni opted for a chic dark blue halter jumpsuit, a much more traditional choice.
Toni and Keri welcomed their two sons during their 12-year marriage. Diezel, who was diagnosed with autism at a young age but has since reportedly overcome it, clearly has a lot to be proud of, and his mom’s bold fashion statement, love it or hate it, didn’t overshadow his incredible accomplishment. It just goes to show, you can’t please everyone, but celebrating your kids? That’s always in style!
