Toni Braxton Opens Up About Health Struggles as Love & Laughter Residency Kicks Off

Grammy-winning R&B icon Toni Braxton is making headlines not just for her soulful voice and magnetic stage presence but also for her candidness about health challenges.

As she embarks on her Love & Laughter residency alongside Cedric the Entertainer in Las Vegas, Braxton’s journey is marked by resilience, anxiety, and a commitment to her craft.

Diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in 2008, Braxton has navigated the highs and lows of fame while managing a chronic autoimmune disease. Her recent setback came in 2022 when she underwent emergency heart surgery, casting doubts on her ability to return to the stage.

However, Braxton’s indomitable spirit shines through as she shares her feelings of readiness to perform once again.

Speaking candidly in an interview, the 56-year-old songstress admits to feeling a mix of excitement and anxiety. Despite receiving clearance from her doctor, the specter of health scares lingers, reminding Braxton of her vulnerability.

In a surprising twist of fate, Braxton told People that she recently discovered a shared connection with her co-star Cedric the Entertainer, learning that Cedric’s late mother battled lupus. Braxton said she finds solace in his empathy and understanding.

The camaraderie between the two artists is palpable, creating a supportive environment conducive to artistic expression.

Navigating her health challenges while pursuing her passion for performing, Braxton acknowledged the importance of self-care and pacing herself.

While she admits to indulging in her guilty pleasures like burgers, she understands the need for balance and moderation.

“You know what? I don’t always eat good ’cause I’m a burger girl, so I’m not going to sit here and lie and say, ‘Oh, I eat real good.’ I try to eat as healthy as I can, especially when I’m working, I try to be disciplined, but I have to have those burgers and things like that,” says Braxton.

She added during the interview with People:

“I just try to pace it. Pacing is very important, and if I feel like I’m overdoing it, I know to take a break. Sometimes it’s hard to do that. You don’t recognize when you’re being stressed a little bit or overdoing it, so I just know to pace it and then everything’s fine.”

Braxton said she remains committed to delivering an unforgettable experience for her audience.

Drawing inspiration from classic variety shows of yesteryears, she promises a blend of music and comedy that transcends entertainment and leaves a lasting impression.

Love & Laughter is set to continue through July, 2024.
