A 12-year-old student, Khimberly Zavaleta Chuquipa, has died after suffering severe brain injuries allegedly caused when another student struck her in the head with a metal water bottle at school, authorities and family members said.
The incident occurred about 10 days before her death inside a school hallway. According to relatives, the sixth grader complained of intense headaches in the days that followed and was initially sent home after an emergency room visit.
Her condition worsened when she later collapsed due to a brain hemorrhage.

Medical Emergency and Surgery
Family members said major blood vessels in Khimberly’s brain ruptured, prompting her transfer to UCLA Children’s Hospital, where she was placed in an induced coma and underwent emergency brain surgery.
Despite doctors’ efforts, she died early Feb. 25.
“Her family remained by her side, praying and hoping she would come home,” a family fundraising page stated. “But at 3:30 a.m., her heart gave out.”
Investigation Underway
The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed it is investigating the case as a homicide. Officials have not yet released details about potential charges or suspects.
Khimberly attended a charter campus within the Los Angeles Unified School District. District officials said they are cooperating with law enforcement and providing counseling resources for students and staff.
“Our thoughts and condolences are with the student’s family, friends, and the entire school community,” the district said in a statement.
Family Grief and Community Response
Relatives described Khimberly as a joyful child who loved music, volleyball, and spending time with her dogs.
Her mother, Elma, said she is overwhelmed by grief.
“I’m devastated. I’m full of pain, thinking about how I will never see my daughter again,” she said.
Khimberly’s uncle called the tragedy a warning about the dangers of bullying and school violence.
“It’s a fear of every parent to lose someone so young who did nothing wrong,” he said.
A memorial has since formed outside her school, where classmates and community members have gathered to honor her life.
