Woman’s Emotional Video Thanking African Americans for Shaping Global Black Identity Goes Viral: ‘I Want to say I’m Sorry’

by Gee NY

A heartfelt TikTok video posted by Sandra Graves (@sandragravesmentor) is going viral for its raw apology and gratitude to African Americans, with the speaker acknowledging how the resilience, culture, and sacrifices of Black Americans have shaped and empowered the global Black diaspora.

In the nearly three-minute message, Graves, who identifies as a Black Latina, opens with a direct apology:

“To begin, I want to say I’m sorry. As a Black Latino, I did not understand your struggle. I did not understand that your fight impacted me. I did not understand that all of your sacrifices impacted me.”

She went on to explain how Black Americans’ leadership in resilience, innovation, and cultural pride has been pivotal not only for their own community but also for Africans, Caribbeans, and Black Latinos worldwide.

“Africans, Caribbeans, Black Latinos, anybody that is Black from any part of the world have benefited from you, from your sacrifices, from your struggles,” she said.

Drawing on her own lived experience, Graves recalled the first time she was called the N-word and realized that her darker skin shaped how others viewed her. She admitted that even within Latino communities, colorism left her excluded until her accent signaled belonging. That rejection, she explained, ultimately pushed her toward self-acceptance — a lesson she credits Black Americans with helping her embrace.

She also pushed back against narratives dismissing African American culture:

“When someone says, Black Americans have no culture, you tell them your culture is resilience, your culture is innovation, your culture is strength. Your culture is music. Your culture is art. Your culture is guiding Black people to embrace who they are.”
