7 Things Kamala Harris Has Promised Puerto Ricans After Trump’s Camp Insulted Them

In a recent video posted on her Instagram page, Vice President Kamala Harris outlined her commitment to the people of Puerto Rico, highlighting a stark contrast between her vision for the island and former President Donald Trump’s record.

Harris’ message to Puerto Rican voters on Sunday, Oct. 27, arrived the same day Trump was set to appear at a rally at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, where Tony Hinchcliffe, a podcast host/roast comedianspewed racist jokes in an opening slot.

He referred to Puerto Rico as “a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean.” Later, he made a remark that Latinos “love making babies” in a lead up to a crude joke, which Vice President Harris’ campaign headquarters called a “vile racist tirade against Latinos” on X (formerly Twitter).

Harris, who has consistently advocated for Puerto Rican interests, stressed the importance of this election for Puerto Rican voters and outlined seven key promises aimed at rebuilding and investing in Puerto Rico’s future.

  1. Economic Investment: Harris pledged to create the Puerto Rico Opportunity Economy Task Force to collaborate with the private sector, nonprofits, and community leaders. This initiative aims to stimulate economic growth and generate thousands of good-paying jobs, particularly for young people on the island.
  2. Affordable Housing: Addressing the cost of living, she committed to reducing housing costs, making it easier for families to secure homes and thrive.
  3. Support for Small Businesses: Harris promised to invest in small businesses and entrepreneurs, recognizing their vital role in Puerto Rico’s economic recovery and growth.
  4. Healthcare Access: She vowed to ensure equal access to health care programs that benefit children, seniors, and working families, addressing longstanding disparities.
  5. Energy Infrastructure: Acknowledging the urgent need for modernization, Harris committed to rebuilding Puerto Rico’s energy grid, cutting bureaucratic red tape to expedite disaster recovery funds, and ensuring that all Puerto Ricans have access to reliable and affordable electricity.
  6. Leadership Accountability: Harris reminded voters of Trump’s failures during Puerto Rico’s crises, including his inadequate response to hurricanes and the disparaging remarks made about the island. She highlighted her dedication to providing the compassionate leadership that Puerto Rico deserves.
  7. Empowerment and Representation: Finally, Harris emphasized her belief in Puerto Ricans’ talent and potential, stating they deserve a president who recognizes and invests in their strengths, aiming for a future where they not only get by but thrive.

Harris concluded her message by stating, “Puerto Ricans deserve better” and promising to fight for their families.
