Ashanti says her pregnancy and engagement to Nelly have been “an amazing experience.”
The Grammy-winning singer, Ashanti, has opened up to Essence about the significant milestones in her life-expecting her first child with her longtime boyfriend, Nelly, who is now officially her fiance.
The reunited couple has gone public with both a pregnancy and their engagement.
“This new year of my life is such a blessing full of love, hope, and anticipation. Motherhood is something that I have looked forward to, and sharing this with my family, fiancé, and loyal fans, who have been so supportive of my career, is an amazing experience,” Ashanti told the outlet.”
Ashanti also amused herself with the news by posting a video of herself getting ready for a show on her verified Instagram account.
In the video, Ashanti responds, “I’m gonna need about nine months,” to her mother and manager Tina Y. Douglas’ question about how much time she’ll need. Her mother gasps, and the screen changes to a logo for Proov, an at-home fertility and hormone marker test.
Ashanti and Nelly are entering a new chapter with all of this. The couple got back together in 2023 after almost a decade of separation. Nelly officially confirmed the news after the two started attending events together and performing flirtatiously. Around this time, Ashanti carried a clutch bag with her and Nelly’s faces on it at last year’s Grammy Awards.

Rumors of Ashanti’s pregnancy have swelled since last December when the “Hot In Herre” rapper happily cuddled her stomach and shared knowing looks on stage.
Although she never refuted her pregnancy, Ashanti chose to be silent like her mother up until her announcement on social media.
While Ashanti is expecting her first child, this baby would be Nelly’s fifth. He has a daughter, Chanelle, and a son, Cornell Jr. Nelly also has two adopted children, Shawn and Sydney Thomas, from his late sister, Jackie Donahue, after she died of leukemia in 2005.
